Introduction
System Safety Engineers (SSE's) evaluate risk associated with the many hazards involved in the operation of a complex technological system. To do this, the SSE needs to be familiar with how the system operates (or is proposed to operate), how similar systems have failed in the past, general hazards with this type of system, approximate probabilities of occurrence for the various hazards, potential mitigations which could reduce the risk, and the requirements being imposed on the system.
The SSE generates reports including: Preliminary Hazard List (PHL), Preliminary Hazard Assessment (PHA), System Hazard Analysis (SHA), Operation and Support Hazard Analysis (O&SHA), and others according to the System Engineering Management Plan and the System Safety Program Plan.
System Safety Managers help define the System Safety process to be followed during the project, conduct analyses, approve analyses, supervise System Safety Engineers and make higher-level presentations of results.
